You can even see the scar under my right eye (drunk laser tag accident) and the evidence of other mistakes everywhere else on my mug. But what you can’t see is that I know nothing about basketball or how to play NBA 2K17.

A career begins
I like basketball, and I watch basketball, but the main thing I know about playing basketball is that you need grit. I think. Or hustle maybe. You’ve gotta want it. And if you don’t want it (or have the hustle), you might blow a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals. Well, I want it. But because I suck at NBA 2K17 so extraordinarily, I probably won’t make it anywhere near the Finals, even in a videogame—some fantasy.

(By the way, I tried to name myself ‘The Warriors Blew A 3-1 Lead In The NBA Finals’ but it didn’t give me enough characters so my first name is "The Warriors Ble" and my last name is "W A Three-One Le." I chose number 69.)You’ll still periodically get cutscenes after games or practices, and there is a (far more believable) narrative to your career, but the story doesn’t dominate the MyCareer experience so much as it complements it. You can now play a full rookie season, and on off days you can spend time heading to sponsor events to collect virtual currency or increase your fanbase, or head to the gym for pickup games against your teammates or organized practices.

Practices can be a bit of a slog, but they are optional. In team practices, you’ll be given a set of three drills to complete, from 3-point contests to games of 3-on-3 to pick and roll practice. Spending the time on drills will eventually increase your attribute caps and allow you to improve your overall rating (provided you have enough VC).

I’m about halfway through my rookie season with the Kings, and while I don’t hate practices, they do feel like a bit of a chore, and the drills aren’t nearly as fun as, say, skill games in FIFA (if 2K can make practices that addicting, I"d never stop playing 2K17). Load times are also slightly annoying - you’re going to spend a lot of time watching you player walk in and out of his own personal gym while you transition from menu to menu. There’s certainly room for improvement, but 2K16’s story mode didn’t quite deliver, 2K17 gives you a career mode that is worth investing in.Do you play My NBA 2K17? That’s...sort of what’s happened. Maybe not with another big name, but definitely in terms of using promising Hollywood talent.For placing well in a Blacktop Challenge, you’ll earn two things. One is a large number of draft picks from the board of cards you see at the end of every Quick Game, which can be helpful for racking up large numbers of low level cards to level up your top players.

You also receive Reward Points that can be used to create special cards you can only earn from this mode. To see them, tap the ‘Ultimate Creator’ button from the Blacktop Challenge main screen. What you’ll see is a pyramid of cards ranging from Super Rare to Legendary (at least at the time of this post), that can be created by the use of certain recipes accessed by buttons at the bottom of the screen.

All of it, honestly. The good, the bad. The wins, the losses. It’s a lot like boxing, man. It’s really about the opponent within yourself. That’s the most important, right?

At it’s most basic level, My NBA 2K17 is a game won by comparing the stats on your players’ cards to those on your opponent’s cards. You’re told which stats are going to be used for the comparison (either one or two) and how many players are involved (again, it can be one or two), and then you choose your guys and hope for the best. Different game modes add more wrinkles, but the underlying formula remains the same.

Does this mean you need to know something about basketball, like if LeBron James is faster than Stephen Curry? Nope. The values on the player cards don’t really correspond to real life.

Instead, the advantage comes mostly from a card’s rarity — super rare is better than rare, which is better than uncommon — and then within the same tier, what level each card is. Cards can be leveled up by selecting them from ‘MyCARDS’ in the main menu, then tapping on ‘Improve.’ Hit the ‘Train’ button and choose cards you’d like to sacrifice to level up the target, just like in nearly every mobile card game since the dawn of time.

BONUS TIP: Every player has a position (some have two), and it pays to play them there. Your lineup for most modes requires a PG, SG, SF, PF and C, and even if you don’t know what those abbreviations stand for, it’s important to heed them. Playing cards in their proper positions gives them stats boosts that could be the difference between winning and losing.

After a cutscene in which I call my mom—which means I’ve called a virtual mom more than I’ve called my real mom this month, shamefully—I manage to score 7 points in my first real game, with 0 rebounds, 0 assists, and 0 blocks for a scouting score of D+. I’m improving!

“Raw,” writes Nate Duncan. “The Warriors Ble needs to cut down on the mental errors, and show more value for the ball.” Screw you too, Nate. The ball is the most precious thing in the world to me. I consider it my child.

Obviously, though, Duncan is right. I should get into some analysis of how NBA 2K17 plays here, though it’s difficult because, as I said, I don’t know how to play basketball. Plus, a lot hinges on the stats of my hideous player, who’s 6’11”, 258 lbs, once killed a man, and moves like a redwood tree on a yoga ball. But I am impressed by the number of actions NBA 2K17 has mapped to two analog sticks and the triggers (and if you didn’t know, you need a controller). If you want to do a mid-air change shot or a post shimmy hook you can do those things, provided you know what they are and how to manipulate the analog sticks to make them happen.NBA 2K17 released last week, and while the game might not have any groundbreaking new modes or features, the major refinements to MyCareer mode make the game markedly better as a single-player experience. The latest version of MyCareer still has some drawbacks, but compared to 2K16’s Spike Lee joint, the difference is night-and-day.
2K16 took a big risk by introducing a story-based career mode (an idea that has since caught on with other games, such as FIFA 17). It was an interesting idea - 2K brought in Spike Lee to write and direct what was essentially a B-level sports movie chronicling the rise of a high-school phenom to the NBA - but the story was heavy-handed, far too serious and, at it’s worst, downright cheesy.
The biggest problem with 2K16’s MyCareer mode, though, was that the story was disconnected from the actual gameplay and actively got in the way of your career in the NBA. In 2K16, your rookie year in the league was reduced to a series of eight games separated by cutscenes.
