In a game where even playing actual NBA games gets tedious after a while (you’ll be simulating meaningless games before your rookie season is even done so you can skip to the more important match-ups), asking players to repeatedly click through a phone screen and watch some idling animations repeat themselves (you rarely get to actually see what happens at an off-court event) just to tick the calendar along is a waste of everyone’s time.
This is my guy for 2K17. Douglas Chan, aka Chandemonium (or, that WOULD have been his nickname if the game hadn’t forced me to adopt “Pres” instead).
On the court, there’s some good stuff here. While the visuals and feel of the game are barely-changed from 2K16—not that this is bad thing, since no other sports game is as good at nailing the physical contact and interactions between athletes—there’s a new feature where the off-court friendship between your character and Justice Young (Michael B Jordan’s guy) evolves into an on-court bonus mode.
Play well together and you’ll unlock ORANGE JUICE mode (yes, that’s its name, it’s what the two main characters call their partnership), a temporary boost where you get to control both characters instead of one, swapping between them at the push of a button like a very expensive recreation of NBA Jam.
It feels weird at first, but once you get the hang of it there are advantages to using it. Mostly because it lets you get more of the ball while in possession; my character Douglas Chan is a small forward and Justice is a guard, so I could control Justice while bringing the ball up then pass inside (or alley oop, which is super easy in this mode) to Chan for the score.NBA 2K17 released last week, and while the game might not have any groundbreaking new modes or features, the major refinements to MyCareer mode make the game markedly better as a single-player experience. The latest version of MyCareer still has some drawbacks, but compared to 2K16’s Spike Lee joint, the difference is night-and-day.
2K16 took a big risk by introducing a story-based career mode (an idea that has since caught on with other games, such as FIFA 17). It was an interesting idea - 2K brought in Spike Lee to write and direct what was essentially a B-level sports movie chronicling the rise of a high-school phenom to the NBA - but the story was heavy-handed, far too serious and, at it’s worst, downright cheesy.
The biggest problem with 2K16’s MyCareer mode, though, was that the story was disconnected from the actual gameplay and actively got in the way of your career in the NBA. In 2K16, your rookie year in the league was reduced to a series of eight games separated by cutscenes. After the storyline finished and the credits rolled, the mode rebooted and you became a free agent who could go anywhere you wanted. 2K16 made MyCareer too much about Lee’s story and disregarded what many players love about MyCareer mode in the first place - game-to-game progression and playing out an entire season as your created player.
2K17 finds more of a happy medium between story and gameplay, but the balance is clearly tipped back towards gameplay. You still choose a college program to sign with and play a few games of college basketball against powerhouses like Kansas or Michigan State, and there’s a cast of characters to interact with, from your college sweetheart to your agent Bruce to your fellow NBA rookie Justice Young (voiced by Michael B. Jordan). Likewise, you don’t have to escape your iOS gadget or root Android gadget keeping in mind the end goal to get the hacked application variant for nothing.
